For engineers who have spent their formative years in music studios, the world of sound-to-picture can seem a strange and alien place. Certainly, the film and broadcast audio industry is full of unique audio terms and techniques (including ADR, foley and room tones), but despite these relative differences there is a surprising number of similarities between the two processes. More recently, it’s also become apparent just how many audio professionals are now required to have an understanding of the two fields – whether it’s a music engineer moonlighting as a boom operator or a commercial studio handling dubbing mixes alongside band recordings.
