Although laptops and FireWire soundcards are making computer-based recording systems more portable, there is still a market for dedicated portable recorders that offer an all-in-one solution and are specifically designed to withstand the rigours of life on the road. Unlike conventional 4-tracks, most portable recorders do not offer the simultaneous playback/record functionality that is required for overdubbing; the norm is for two (or more) channels dedicated to recording. It is this simple functionality that has remained consistent, even though the formats have changed a great deal since the first reel-to-reel machines.
