In the issue

The task of getting two or more instruments to sit together in a mix without competing for the listener’s attention is the function of the mix engineer. In the first of a two-part feature on mixing a five-piece band, Mark Cousins looks at what techniques can be used on the rhythm section instruments: drums, bass and guitar.

Whatever you use your recording equipment for, you’re sure to need a pair of studio monitors to assess your work. However, with so many monitors to choose from, how do you decide which monitors are best for you? Huw Price provides the low-down on your options. Be sure to read this before spending any of you hard-earned cash on new studio monitors.

Do your project studio recordings suffer from ambient noise? Also in this month’s Music Tech Magazine we investigate the various techniques and technologies available to you to assist in reducing and eliminating extraneous noises from your recordings.

Our regular Software Workshops this month include examinations of Cubase SX/SL3’s Built-in Dynamics Effects, Ableton Live 5’s Built-in Audio Effects and Extreme Audio Editing in Logic Pro 7. While our Ten Minute Masters provide you with a detailed look at Room Modes and Surround Sound Formats.

The biggest music trade show in the world, NAMM has closed its doors for the year. If you weren’t lucky enough to get to the show, don’t fret, we brought back all the big news from the show this issue. The best of the pre-NAMM gear is reviewed, including Digidesign Pro Tools 7, Arturia Brass, and the M-Audio ProKeys 88 and we’ll be taking a more detailed look at the main NAMM releases over the coming months.
