While a cursory glance at the spec sheets of several portable recorders may indicate little difference between each one, the keen observer will notice that there is far more to the current crop than merely choosing from a selection of me-too products. Each of the various manufacturers currently producing portable recorders has a different view on what is important in a portable recording device. This has resulted in devices as disparate as Zoom’s H4 – which has two XLR mic inputs with phantom power and can operate as a USB audio interface – and Yamaha’s new Pocketrak 2G, which sacrifices such extravagant features in favour of a smaller, more ‘pocketable’ design.
