Now in its fourth iteration, does Ozone still meet the demands of modern mastering? Mark Cousins evaluates the changes.

Ozone, by Boston-based company iZotope, is one of the defining products that helped kick-start the revolution in software mastering. When it was first released in 2002, the world of project studio mastering was still dominated by expensive hardware products such as TC Electronic’s Finalizer, and few foresaw the £200 plug-in competing with such specialist equipment. However, despite these initial misgivings, Ozone proved itself to be highly competent, offering multi-band compression, limiting and equalization in a single interface.
