Synth design, like many things in the electronic music world, is forever changing, with new software and hardware synths bringing new techniques and increasingly complex modulation routings. However, sit a synth pro in front of a 30-year-old Moog and he’ll make it sing. The reason for this is obviously not cutting-edge technology, but programming prowess, which can be broken down into two things: the ability to program a good synth patch and the ability to write a good sequenced pattern.
